About Us

The South-Western Ontario Surgical Association (SWOSA) was founded in 1954 by Dr. Angus McLachlin. Angus (“Bam”)McLachlin is remembered as an outstanding surgeon and teacher of medical students and surgeons. He was born in St. Thomas in 1908 and attended Western where he was a distinguished student and athlete. He was captain of the Mustang Football Team. He went to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and received his D. Phil in physiology. His surgical training was obtained at the University of Toronto and his surgical skills perfected in Europe where he served with distinction during the Second World War. He returned to London as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery in 1945.

Dr. Angus McLachlin sought to address the common issues faced by surgeons in the region and today, we accomplish this through events such as our Grand Rounds and the Dr. Archibald Grace Memorial Lecture.

Mission and Vision

The South Western Ontario Surgical Association seeks to bring together surgeons from across south-western Ontario to further our knowledge, improve our surgical practice, and address common issues facing surgeons across the region.

What We Do

We host a number of events throughout the year including monthly SWOSA Grand Rounds and the Dr. Archibald Grace Lecture. We are further dedicated to the continual improvement and development of surgical professors, and offer the Dr. Angus D. McLachlin Professorship. Learn more below:
